What is BARENIA®?

BARENIA® is a rare, heritage calfskin leather developed in Alsace, France, known for its buttery feel and rich natural patina. Once exclusive to Hermès, it remains one of the most luxurious leathers ever produced.

History of Luxury

BARENIA® originated in the 1970s, being used initially used for saddlery. Renowned for its exceptional durability and luxurious feel, numerous brands started adapting it for other luxury leather goods, most notably Hermès.

Tanned to Perfection

BARENIA® leather is tanned at the well known "Tanneries HAAS" in the Alsace region in France. Known as NOVONAPPA® (and by its close cousin BARANIL®), it undergoes a dual chrome and vegetable tanning process. Only select calf hides are chosen. Post tanning, it undergoes a soaking process in 9 different types of oils for 5-6 weeks, giving it its lush luster.

Beauty in Imperfection

BARENIA® has a smooth, matte feel while retaining a subtle sheen due to its tanning process. As it is a full-grain and minimally treated leather, wrinkles, scars, and veins are not deemed as flaws. Instead they're viewed as an honoring of the calf skin. Similar to how no 2 animals live the same, no 2 BARENIA® articles age the same: each article develops a patina that is unique to its holder, reflecting its journey.
